We're considering deprecating the Hadoop File System (HDFS) package module. If you are using this module, please let us know by March 4th, 2025.
This HDFS module enables Chapel programs to work with files stored in the Hadoop File System. It's our impression that Hadoop and its filesystem are used much less frequently than they used to be and that HDFS integration is no longer of interest to Chapel users. We are writing to check if our impression is accurate.
Are you still using this package? Would you be interested in helping maintain it as a Mason package instead of something bundled with Chapel (which is our goal for several other package modules along these lines)? If either of those answers are yes, please respond to this message by March 4th, 2025.
If no one indicates they are still using this package, we will plan on deprecating it in either 2.4 or 2.5, with full removal potentially happening two releases later (assuming no one objects in the meanwhile). We don’t want to remove something that is still useful to our users, but we also want to prioritize working on things that are important to them.
